Which One – Simple or Complex Carbs

Carbs should be a foundation to any Fat Loss Nutrition plan.

Don’t listen to all the hype out there – carbohydrates (carbs) are not fattening. Usually , when people want to reduce their weight the first thing that they remove from their nutrition plan is carbs – this is a error.

Don’t get me wrong, too much of anything can cause you to put on weight , including carbohydrates – but they are not , by themselves, the major factor why we become overweight . Also , and this is a key point , carbs are the main source of your body’s energy , and so are a key component of your Fat Loss Nutrition Plan.

Okay, before going any further , let’s go back to the foundations of nutrition. The three main food types are proteins, carbohydrates and fat . In addition , there are two types of carbohydrates –

  1. simple carbohydrates
  2. complex carbs

Sources of simple carbohydrates include fruit sugar (fructose), lactose (milk sugar) and table sugar (sucrose). They rapidly enter the blood stream providing you with very quick energy – often leading to a sugar rush (spike) which can put your blood sugar level at a point lower before before you ate the food . It is for this reason and the fact that simple sugars have very little nutritional value , that you should eliminate them from your diet .

Sources of complex carbohydrates include whole grains (such as brown bread ) and whole wheat ( e.g. brown rice & pasta ). Complex carbs provide you with a continuous supply of energy since they are slowly released into the blood aided by their high fibre content – thereby providing you with a steady release of insulin in the body . Complex carbohydrates are far superior in nutritional value than simple sugars and must be introduced into your weight loss plan.

Great news – you don’t need to give up pasta, bread or rice as part of your far loss plan . You should stick to the unrefined varieties – whole grain and whole wheat to ensure the best nutritional content.

I am not suggesting that you can consume as many complex carbs as you like ; moderation is they key . Too many calories from any type of food can translate into an increase in your body weight – and more specifically an increase in your body fat percentage .

To avoid over eating on complex carbohydrates, it is best to eat smaller portions combined with good lean protein sources and copious amounts of vegetables and beans . Also, use plates of smaller size and eat very slowly. This will allow your brain to send signals to your stomach and tell you when you are full. Don’t go for a second portion .

Finally – you should significantly reduce , your intake of foods that contain white flour, e.g. pastries, biscuits, crackers, and cookies, etc. Their nutritional value is close to zero and they are usually highly calorific.

Remember – Carbs are a key element to your Fat Loss Nutrition Plan.
